Assam is building a robust ‘concert economy’: CM Sarma, signals plan to bring Shakira to Guwahati

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday hailed Post Malone’s debut performance in Guwahati as a “rare and historic moment” for the state, signalling Assam’s growing rise as a global concert destination.

Calling it a milestone for the state’s cultural economy, Sarma said, “Post Malone performing in Guwahati is more than a concert — it’s a landmark in Assam’s journey to becoming a true cultural hub. Two days ago, I watched his show in Abu Dhabi. The energy, the crowd — it was electrifying. To have an artist of his global stature perform here is extraordinary.”

The Chief Minister formally welcomed the American superstar, saying the event marks the first time an internationally top-ranked musician is performing live in Assam. “I hope the event passes peacefully. This is a unique occasion for our state,” he added.

In a notable revelation, Sarma said preliminary discussions had taken place about bringing global pop icon Shakira to Assam.

“We had a little discussion about Shakira, but not much. Let it come naturally. But I feel like bringing Shakira to Guwahati. Next year or the year after, we will try,” he said, noting that an earlier opportunity in February could not be finalised. “It may take 2–3 years, but I want to bring Shakira to Guwahati — and also big artists to Dibrugarh and Silchar.”

Sarma reiterated that Assam is building a robust “concert economy,” with Guwahati poised to emerge as a major hub in the next few years.

“Shillong and Guwahati are almost twin towns — both will grow together. There was a time when fans flocked to Shillong for rock shows. Today, Guwahati takes centre stage,” he said.

Post Malone’s concert in the city marks a major step in Assam’s effort to secure global live acts and spotlight the state as a prime destination for international entertainment.
