Dibrugarh, Jan 6: A crude oil pipeline operated by Oil India Limited (OIL) burst late Monday night at Shalmari Dighalia Gaon in Tingkhong, spilling oil into nearby agricultural fields and fish-rearing ponds and causing losses to local residents.

The incident occurred around 10 pm, triggering continuous leakage of crude oil that quickly spread across surrounding farmland. Several fish reportedly died after coming into contact with the oil, affecting fish cultivators and farmers in the area.

Residents alleged negligence on the part of OIL, claiming the pipeline is extremely old and has been prone to repeated failures. The strong smell of crude oil spread rapidly, creating panic and fears of a potential fire.

Within a short time, the leaked oil flowed into adjacent fields and ponds, compounding environmental damage and economic losses.

“We heard a loud sound around 10 pm. When we came out, we saw that the OIL pipeline had burst and crude oil was spilling out. Fire tenders from OIL arrived immediately to control the leakage,” said Monimanik Gogoi, a local resident.

He added that the pipelines need urgent replacement. “The pipelines are too old and should be replaced. There are around 50 oil wells in our village, including two OCS and one DCS. OIL must take necessary steps to change the pipelines,” Gogoi said.

“A major incident could have occurred due to the pipeline burst, but it was averted due to the timely intervention of the department,” he added.
