Boko, Jan 6: In an effort to preserve and promote the vibrant folk traditions and indigenous musical instruments of Assam’s ethnic communities, the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) organised the first-ever Indigenous Folk Instrument Playing Festival 2026 at the Council Secretariat in Dudhnoi on Monday evening.
The festival was formally inaugurated by RHAC Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha, who cut the ceremonial red ribbon to mark the opening of the event. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp was performed by RHAC Chairman Sonaram Rabha, Vice-Chairperson Alka Rabha, and All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) President Motilal Baksuk.

Addressing the media, Tankeswar Rabha said the Council has taken a proactive step to safeguard traditional folk instruments of indigenous communities while also aiming to present them on a global platform. He added that in the coming years, the festival will be expanded beyond the Council’s jurisdiction to reach wider audiences.

Performances by artistes from the Rabha, Bodo, Garo, Hajong and several other communities captivated the audience, offering a powerful glimpse into Assam’s rich cultural mosaic. The festival featured a diverse range of traditional instruments, including Kham, Serja, Gamani, Kara-Nal, Kaliya and Dhol, Badungdupa, Brangchi, Sigaring, and the A·chik drum, each reflecting the unique musical heritage of the communities they represent.
