Assam: PHE Engineer Caught Taking Rs. 20,000 Bribe, Rs. 80 Lakh Recovered from Guwahati Residence

Guwahati, May 13: In yet another successful operation against corrupt government officials, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam has trapped an Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department.

Jayanta Goswami, an Executive Engineer posted in the North Lakhimpur district, was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000 in the Hengarabari locality in Guwahati.


Following the arrest, the vigilance team conducted a raid at Goswami’s residence in Guwahati, where they recovered cash amounting to Rs. 80 lakh. The recovered money is suspected to have been obtained through illegal means.

Sources informed that Goswami allegedly demanded Rs. 20,000 from a contractor in return for clearing pending bills. The complainant then approached the vigilance department and lodged a complaint.

Today, the accused, Jayanta Goswami, was caught red-handed accepting the bribe from the complainant inside a local hotel. The vigilance team immediately arrested him.


The official tweet by the Directorate states, “Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red-handed Jayanta Goswami, Executive Engineer (PHE), O/O Superintending Engineer (PHE), North Lakhimpur Circle, after he accepted Rs. 20,000/- as bribe from the complainant at Hengrabari, Guwahati for payment of bills.”

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption is conducting further investigations and raids in connection with the case to uncover any additional evidence of corruption.
