Guwahati, April 7: The political contest ahead of the Assam Assembly elections took a dramatic turn as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi traded public challenges, invoking oaths on the Bhagavad Gita over allegations of undisclosed foreign assets.
After Sarma rejected the Congress’s claims, Gogoi challenged him to deny the allegations under oath on the holy text.
“I said this yesterday and I repeat it—I can swear on the Bhagavad Gita that I do not own any property in London, as alleged by Sarma. Can he do the same?” Gogoi said, daring the Chief Minister to meet at a common place and take the oath publicly.
Gogoi also accused Sarma of deflecting attention by spreading “falsehoods” about political opponents, while raising questions about alleged undisclosed assets and business interests abroad. He added that any admission of such properties—if not declared in election affidavits—could lead to disqualification.
Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera joined Gogoi in seeking clarity on allegations related to foreign assets, including claims of properties in Dubai, business links in the United States, and the existence of possible shell companies.
In response, Sarma issued a counter-challenge during a rally in Kaliabor, inviting Gogoi to Batadrawa Satra on April 8.
“I swear my children will die within 72 hours if we have even an inch of property outside India. Will Gaurav Gogoi swear that he and his wife do not have any property abroad?” Sarma said.
With polling just days away, the exchange highlights an increasingly aggressive campaign, with both the BJP and Congress stepping up personal attacks in a bid to gain an electoral edge.
