Guwahati, April 6: A 30-year-old man from Guwahati drowned at a waterfall inside the Rani Reserved Forest along the Assam–Meghalaya border, police said on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Dipu Kalita, a resident of Bamunimaidam under Chandmari Police Station.
Kalita had gone to the Jalukpaham waterfall with family members on April 4 for a picnic via the Lokhra–Garbhanga road. At around 5:45 p.m., he entered the water and was swept into a deeper section, officials said.
Family members alerted the police, following which a team from Rani Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the spot. However, the search operation could not continue due to darkness.
The search resumed the next morning, and the body was recovered at around 10:30 a.m. on April 5.
The body was later sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem and subsequently handed over to the family.
Officials said at least two similar drowning incidents have been reported at the same location in the past two years.
Local residents have demanded that the Forest Department put up fencing and restrict access to the deeper sections of the waterfall to prevent such incidents.
