A 30-year-old man from Guwahati drowned at a waterfall inside the Rani Reserved Forest along the Assam–Meghalaya border, police said on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Dipu Kalita, a resident of Bamunimaidam under Chandmari Police Station.
Two tragic drowning incidents cast a shadow over Easter Monday celebrations in West Garo Hills, raising fresh concerns over public safety during festive outings. The day after Easter, widely observed across the region as a time for picnics and family gatherings due to the summer heat, turned somber with the loss of two young lives at separate locations.
As the monsoon season brings in heavy rains to the state, which have helped lower the temperatures, it has also at the same time increased the water levels in streams and rivers. In light of the recent drowning in South Garo Hills and elsewhere in the region, the East Garo Hills district has issued advisory in the interest of public safety and security.
