Imphal, April 7: Two toddlers were killed and their mother critically injured after a suspected militant bomb attack struck a civilian home in Manipur’s Bishnupur district early Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in Moirang Tronglaobi when a bomb, allegedly fired by suspected Kuki militants, hit the house while the family was asleep.
A five-year-old boy and a six-month-old girl were killed instantly in the blast, while their mother sustained severe injuries, police said.
According to officials, all three victims were inside their bedroom when the explosion ripped through the house.
Condemning the attack, local BJP MLA Th. Shanti Singh described it as a “heinous act of terrorism,” alleging the involvement of “Kuki narco-terrorists.”
“Such inhuman acts have no place in our society and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” he said.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said he was “deeply pained” by the incident, calling it a horrific act against innocent civilians.
“Such a tragic attack that took the lives of two innocent children is beyond condemnable,” Singh said, adding that the incident underscores the need for stronger ground-level vigilance and timely intervention.
He expressed confidence that authorities would bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen measures to safeguard civilians, while also remarking that the state must remember “who provoked” violence at a time when peace efforts were underway.
Security forces have since launched a massive combing operation in the area to track down those responsible.
Moirang Tronglaobi, a low-lying area near the hill districts of Churachandpur, has witnessed repeated incidents of gunfire during the peak of ethnic violence in 2023 and 2024.
