Kohima, April 7: Tension escalated in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district ahead of the by-election after clashes between rival political supporters left one person dead and several others injured, police said on Monday.

Violence was reported from Longkhum and Mangmetong villages, where supporters of BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen and Independent candidate Major Toshikaba (Retd) allegedly clashed.

In Longkhum, stone-throwing between the two groups left at least three people injured. Police have reported that 16 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. One of the injured, Imrongsungba Imchen, later succumbed to his injuries while being referred to Dimapur for advanced treatment.

Authorities said the situation is currently under control, though tension persists in the area.
In a separate incident in Mangmetong village, around 12 vehicles were vandalised on Monday morning. During subsequent search operations, police recovered arms and ammunition and arrested one suspect.

Security has been tightened across the district as officials seek to prevent further escalation ahead of polling.
