Assam polls 2026: Campaign ends with ‘run away’ charge, police visit sparks row

Must read

Guwahati, Apr 7:The campaign for the Assam Assembly elections ended on a combative note on Tuesday, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accusing Congress leader Pawan Khera of “running away” after daring Assam Police to arrest him.

An Assam Police team earlier visited Khera’s Delhi residence in connection with a criminal defamation case filed by Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

“Khera had dared the police to arrest him. Now, when they reached his home, he had gone to Hyderabad,” Sarma said in Sivasagar.

He added that the police would “track him down from ‘patal’” to identify who provided the alleged false documents linked to the claims against his family.

The case stems from allegations made by Khera that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held multiple passports and had undisclosed assets abroad. The family has rejected the claims, calling the documents “fabricated” and “doctored”.

The Congress hit back, with senior leader Jairam Ramesh accusing the chief minister of using the police to target Opposition voices.

The exchange marked a sharp end to a campaign dominated by personal attacks and legal threats in its final stretch. On the final day, both Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that public support remained the BJP’s strength, while reiterating commitments to border security, development, and economic growth in Assam.
