Guwahati, Apr 8: In a major setback for the Congress ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, its Udalguri candidate Suren Daimari resigned from the party on Wednesday, just a day before polling.
Announcing his decision, Daimari levelled serious allegations against the party, claiming neglect and lack of communication from its leadership even after being fielded as a candidate.
“Congress is a betrayer party. They defrauded me. Even after giving me the ticket, they did not respond. I called them multiple times, but they didn’t answer,” he told reporters.
“I got no response from the party or its leaders, so I have left. I have not received any support—that’s why I stepped away,” he added.
Daimari further alleged that he received neither organisational backing nor coordination from party leaders during the campaign period, which ultimately prompted his exit.
He also accused the Congress of indulging in appeasement politics, claiming, “Congress does appeasement of the Miya community.”
His resignation comes at a critical juncture, dealing a blow to the party’s prospects in Udalguri on the eve of polling.
Assam is set to vote on April 9 across all 126 Assembly constituencies in a single-phase election.
