Assam: Renovated Pathology Heritage Museum inaugurated at Assam Medical College

Dibrugarh, July 17: The renovated Pathology Heritage Museum of the Assam Medical College (AMC), Dibrugarh was inaugurated by AMC Vice Principal Prof Reema Nath on Tuesday.

The 1964 batch of alumni of Assam Medical College had donated an amount of Rs. 3,65,650 towards the renovation of the museum. The contribution by Dr Nath at individual level helped to materialise the dream into a reality.

Dr Adity Sharma, Professor & Head of the Department of Pathology, said the museum will immensely benefit the students. She said that over 1500 specimens have been housed in the museum which they have been collecting since 1991.

Declared a heritage centre by the Heritage Conservation Society of Assam (HECSA), the museum is a treasured part of the College.

The Assam Medical College, originally known as Berry White Medical School, was established on November 3, 1947. The Department of Pathology began in 1948 and moved to a new campus in 1949, previously used as a horse – racing course during the British Raj.

The first head of the department was Professor AE Sunderason, followed by Dr Nittya Gupta, who collaborated with eminent pathologists Dr NC Dey, Dr BD Baruah, Dr NG Banerjee, Dr L Kakoty and Dr Pin Taneja to establish the post mortem block, museum and administrative block.

Dr Nepal Chandra Dey, a distinguished pathologist from Calcutta Medical College, joined in 1951 and became head of the department in 1952. Renowned for his multifaceted skills, Dr Dey wrote numerous textbooks on pathology, bacteriology, medical parasitological, mycology and tropical skin diseases used by students in India and abroad.

His dedication to developing the Pathology Museum is noteworthy. He meticulously arranged specimens, often spending entire days in the museum to ensure its cataloguing organization.
