Guwahati, April 22: In a tragic incident, an Assam Rifles soldier from Gohpur took his own life in Manipur on Sunday. The soldier, identified as Gopal Biswakarma (48), hailed from Rajabari village in Gohpur sub-division in Assam’s Biswanath district.
In a statement issued by Defence PRO, said that Biswakarma was found lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound during the early hours of Sunday, while on duty in Manipur’s Churachandpur. Biswakarma originally hails from Rajabari in Gohpur, he had devoted his life to serve the nation, having enlisted in the Assam Rifles in 2002.
This incident has cast a deep shadow of grief over the entire Gohpur sub-division.
His wife informed media persons that after a leave of 60 days, Biswakarma resumed his duty on April 16. Just a few hours before the incident, he had a phone conversation with her around 10 pm, informing that he would be on patrolling duty after midnight. Sadly, a few hours later, at around 3 am, his wife received the news of his death.
Expressing his sorrow, Biswakarma’s brother said, “My brother joined the force in 2002 and served the nation for around 22 years and two months before making the ultimate sacrifice.”
He is survived by an elderly mother, wife, two daughters, and four elder brothers.
