Assam signs MoU with AAI for pre-feasibility study of five greenfield airports

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 28: In a major push to expand aviation infrastructure and regional connectivity, the Government of Assam on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to conduct pre-feasibility studies for five proposed greenfield airports across the state.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Commissioner and Secretary, Transport, Akashdeep, signed on behalf of the state government, while AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar represented the aviation authority.

The proposed greenfield airports are planned at Manas National Park, Umrangshu (Umrangso), Majuli, Diphu and Charaideo — locations chosen for their strategic, tourism and regional connectivity potential.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma said a greenfield airport at Manas National Park would address strategic and security considerations while significantly boosting wildlife tourism in western Assam.

He added that airports at Majuli, Umrangshu, Diphu and Charaideo would enhance regional connectivity, improve accessibility to remote districts, and increase tourist footfall — contributing directly to local economic development.

The Chief Minister further said that developing these greenfield airports would allow Assam to set a replicable model for other states in expanding aviation networks in geographically challenging regions.

Sarma also urged AAI to consider upgrading Rupsi Airport into a full-fledged airport, citing its strategic proximity to the Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the Chicken’s Neck.

Additionally, he requested enhanced international connectivity from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, emphasising Assam’s growing importance as a gateway to Southeast Asia.

“The greenfield airports and the launching of flight operations from these locations are expected to provide a major fillip to regional connectivity, boost tourism, industry and commerce, and strengthen strategic communication infrastructure across the state,” he said.

He added that the initiative would reinforce Assam’s role as a key gateway to Northeast India and neighbouring South and Southeast Asian nations.

Among those present at the signing ceremony were MLA Dharmeswar Konwar; Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang; Chief Executive Member of NC Hills Autonomous Council Debolal Gorlosa; Chief Secretary Ravi Kota; Secretary, Civil Aviation, Government of India, Samir Kumar Sinha; along with senior officials from the state and central governments.

The pre-feasibility studies will assess technical viability, land requirements, environmental considerations and projected passenger demand before detailed project reports are prepared.
