Shillong, Feb 28: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday flagged off 84 new buses, including 55 electric buses inducted under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme, marking one of the largest upgrades to Shillong’s public transport fleet in recent years.
The buses were launched under the banner ‘Ka Bos Jong Ngi’ (Our Bus) by the Urban Affairs Department at a programme held at the New Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The initiative aims to overhaul daily commuting in Shillong with safer, cleaner and technology-enabled public transport.
The newly inducted fleet comes equipped with air-conditioning, mobile charging points, real-time tracking systems and e-ticketing facilities, aligning Meghalaya’s transport infrastructure with national smart mobility standards.

A pilot service has begun on the IIM Shillong–Upper Shillong route, with operations scheduled daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Officials said the expansion is expected to ease congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and offer commuters a reliable alternative to private vehicles.
The induction of electric buses under the Centre-backed PM eBus Sewa Scheme also signals Meghalaya’s commitment to sustainable and climate-friendly urban development.
In a parallel boost to grassroots livelihoods, the Chief Minister handed over seven food carts to beneficiaries of the Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK), supporting micro-entrepreneurship and income generation.
