Assam woos Japanese investment, CM Sarma pushes infrastructure ties

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 28: Assam stepped up its global investment outreach as Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma met Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii and Japan’s Ambassador to India Keiichi Ono, positioning the state as a strategic gateway for Japanese businesses in Northeast India.

The high-level meeting on Friday focused on attracting Japanese investments across key sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, information technology, the semiconductor industry, skills development, and sustainable development.

Highlighting Assam’s investor-friendly policies, expanding connectivity and rapid infrastructure push, Dr Sarma underscored the state’s strategic importance under India’s Act East Policy, describing Assam as a natural bridge to Southeast Asia.

Significantly, Japanese companies have expressed interest in the upcoming semiconductor project at Jagiroad — a move that could position Assam as an emerging electronics manufacturing hub in the Northeast.

The discussions also extended beyond capital investment, with both sides exploring ways to enhance employment opportunities for Assam’s youth in Japan through Japanese language training and skill development initiatives.

Minister Iwao Horii invited the Chief Minister to visit Japan to further strengthen bilateral engagement. Dr Sarma reciprocated by inviting Japan’s Prime Minister and leading industry representatives to visit Assam to explore long-term economic partnerships.

Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota, Additional Chief Secretary Dr K.K. Dwivedi, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.

The engagement signals Assam’s expanding diplomatic and economic outreach as it seeks to attract global capital into high-tech and infrastructure sectors.
