Guwahati, Feb 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said the BJP is likely to finalise its seat-sharing arrangement with its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), by March 10 for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Sarma said the BJP may opt for “friendly contests” in constituencies where seat-sharing disputes remain unresolved.
He expressed optimism that the BJP would be able to seal a deal with its key allies — the AGP and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — within the stipulated timeframe.
“We will be happy if the BJP and AGP reach an understanding on the sharing of seats, but we will have friendly contests if there are disputes in some seats,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister added that the agreement with the Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF was more or less finalised on February 26, and expressed confidence that a similar understanding with the AGP would be reached by March 10.
Meanwhile, the Congress appears to be grappling with internal strains over its proposed alliance with the Raijor Dal, a regional party led by its lone MLA, Akhil Gogoi.
Sources said discussions between the Congress and Raijor Dal are ongoing, but talks have not progressed smoothly so far.
