Guwahati, Sept 26: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam has issued summons to entrepreneur Shyamkanu Mahanta and singer Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddhartha Sarma, directing them to join the ongoing investigation within 10 days.
According to sources, the SIT served the notices following consecutive raids at Mahanta’s residence, including one carried out on Friday. Mahanta, who is also the chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, faces charges under Sections 61(2), 105, and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, in connection with Garg’s untimely death.
The SIT is expected to continue questioning Mahanta in the coming days. Meanwhile, protests across Assam have escalated, with demonstrators demanding immediate arrests and a transparent probe into the death of the state’s beloved musical icon.
The summons comes just a day after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured citizens that “no individual would be spared” in the investigation into Garg’s demise in Singapore. Multiple FIRs have already been filed against Mahanta and Sarma, intensifying scrutiny on the duo.
In a sharp remark on Thursday, the chief minister distanced his government from Mahanta’s initiatives, saying they do not represent Assamese culture.
“Shyamkanu Mahanta’s programmes are not associated with Assamese culture, and that’s why I never attended them. I once went to his programme at Judges Field, but after a disruption from the crowd, I left immediately,” Sarma told reporters.
He further added that, during his political career, he had attended Mahanta’s event in Delhi only once. “I never encourage him or his programmes because they are not connected to Assamese culture. The state government has decided no funding will be given to him,” the chief minister said.
