Assam ‘Snake Doctor’ Surajit Giri resigns after officer’s rebuke, withdraws resignation following public outcry

Must read

Guwahati, July 17: Dr. Surajit Giri, a renowned anaesthesiologist at Demow Model Hospital in Assam’s Sivasagar district — popularly known as the “snake doctor” for his life-saving work in treating snakebite victims — tendered his resignation after being allegedly humiliated by an Assam Civil Service officer Parishmita Dehingia.

Dehingia, serving as a magistrate in Demow, reportedly summoned Dr. Giri to her chamber on July 11 while he was attending to a woman in active labour. She allegedly accused him of dereliction of duty and subjected him to a humiliating interrogation, demanding to know why he had “not done his duty well.”

Dr. Giri, who has served the region for 18 years, is widely respected for his dedication to rural healthcare. He has treated over 3,000 snakebite patients, performed more than 7,000 surgeries, and is credited with saving more than 1,200 lives — often in remote, high-risk settings. Calling medicine his “religion,” he has become a beacon of hope in areas where snakebites are common but proper treatment is rare.

The news of his resignation sparked a massive public outcry across Assam. Social media erupted with condemnation of the officer’s alleged misconduct, and public support poured in for Dr. Giri. The Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh demanded Dehingia’s immediate suspension and a departmental inquiry, calling her actions “high-handed” and “life-threatening,” as they disrupted critical medical care.

Responding to overwhelming public appeals, Dr. Giri has since withdrawn his resignation and agreed to return to duty at Demow Model Hospital.

Speaking to Hub News, Dr Surajit Giri said, “I’ve decided to withdraw my resignation after Health Minister and people of Assam requested me to withdraw the resignation which I have given. If Sivasagar District administration wants me to join the service, then I will join and serve for the people,”.

“I am amazed after seeing the love of the people for me in social media. Now, I have decided to withdraw my resignation and join the service. The Health minister also told me to withdraw the resignation and join the service,”.

Snakebites remain a serious health hazard in rural Assam, where lack of awareness and delayed treatment often lead to preventable deaths. Many said Dr. Giri’s dedicated work in this field has saved countless lives and set a benchmark for public service in rural healthcare.
