Shillong, July 17: The state government has confirmed that the admission process for Williamson Sangma State University has commenced, and preparations are underway to begin admissions for the university’s Shillong campus, which is likely to function temporarily from the Bijni Complex in Laitumkhrah.
Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma on Wednesday said, “The admission process has started for the State university, and we are working towards initiating the same for the Shillong campus.”
Regarding the proposed site for the temporary campus, Sangma stated that discussions are ongoing, and an out-of-court resolution appears possible. “There was a hearing yesterday, and NEHU has submitted a petition proposing to settle the issue and form a committee,” he said.
“We intend to move forward by setting up a committee and resolving the matter through mutual dialogue. An out-of-court settlement seems likely,” he added.
Earlier, the government had identified the Bijni Complex as the temporary location for the Shillong campus. However, this decision was challenged in the Meghalaya High Court by the NEHU Registrar. Following the legal dispute, the government also began exploring options for a permanent site at New Shillong Township.
When asked about the likelihood of an out-of-court settlement, Sangma was cautious. “It’s too early to say anything definitively. If both parties agree, we would like to use the Bijni Complex to run the Shillong campus temporarily. Let’s see how things develop. The committee will have to take the next steps,” he said.
The government is hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon, allowing the Shillong campus to commence academic activities without further delay.
