Guwahati, Oct 01: Amar Pran Changmai, a progressive mushroom farmer from Sarupathar in Golaghat district, Assam, has been conferred with the National Level Recommendation for Progressive Mushroom Grower Award 2025 by the ICAR–Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR), Solan, Himachal Pradesh. The award was presented during the annual Mushroom Mela in Solan, following his nomination by the AICRP on Mushroom Centre at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat.

Changmai, who has been engaged in mushroom cultivation for the past 17 years, specializes in oyster mushrooms and also grows milky mushrooms in smaller quantities. Starting in 2008, when marketing posed serious challenges due to low awareness, he persisted with his venture and encouraged neighbors to take up mushroom farming.
Today, he produces nearly 60,000 bags annually, harvesting an average of 300 kg of fresh mushrooms daily—supplying about 60% to Nagaland, 20% to Arunachal Pradesh, and the remaining to local Assam markets. Except during the COVID-19 pandemic, his entire produce has been sold fresh, reflecting robust demand.
Officials say Changmai’s success story demonstrates the rising potential of mushrooms as a nutritious “super veg food” and highlights their role in boosting rural livelihoods.
“His recognition at the national level is seen as an inspiration for farmers across Northeast India to scale up production and explore wider markets” officials added.
