Guwahati, Oct 01:Tragedy struck at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station extension project in Minjur, Thiruvallur district, on Tuesday, when nine migrant workers from Assam died at a construction site.
According to police, the accident occurred when an under-construction structure at the site collapsed during ongoing work being carried out by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). All nine victims, engaged as labourers, hailed from Assam’s Karbi Anglong and Hojai districts.
The deceased has been identified as:
1. Munna Kemprai
2. Sorbojit Thausen
3. Phaibit Fanglu
4. Bidayum Porbosa
5. Paban Sorong
6. Prayanto Sorong
7. Suman Kharikap
8. Dimaraj Thousen
9. Dipak Raijung
Officials from Assam said they are coordinating with Tamil Nadu authorities to ensure the early repatriation of the bodies. Four of the victims were from Karbi Anglong district, while five hailed from Hojai.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, terming the incident a tragedy. “I am deeply saddened to hear that nine workers from Assam lost their lives in an accident that occurred during the construction work carried out by BHEL in Ennore. I convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives,” Stalin said in a social media post.
He directed Electricity Minister S. S. Sivasankar and TANGEDCO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan to rush to the site and oversee relief and rescue operations. The CM also announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and assured that arrangements would be made to transport the mortal remains to Assam.
