Shillong, May 24: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, organised a special awareness programme at Kyntiew Shaphrang Higher Secondary School, Laitlyngkot. The initiative was part of CBC’s ongoing outreach efforts and focused on key national themes—Swachhata Hi Seva, Poshan Abhiyan, and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam—to promote cleanliness, nutrition, and environmental consciousness among students and the local community.
Dr. L. Jaba, Medical Officer and In-charge of Laitlyngkot PHC, explained the significance of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, describing tree-planting in honour of mothers as both a spiritual gesture and a commitment to the environment. He also addressed Poshan Abhiyan, stressing that nutrition is the foundation of a healthy society and that tackling malnutrition requires collective effort.
Highlighting the importance of cleanliness under Swachhata Hi Seva, Dr. Jaba invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s words: “Cleanliness is more important than freedom,” urging students to begin with their homes, schools, and surroundings.

O. Sumer, District Health and Education Officer, East Khasi Hills, delivered a session on adolescent nutrition, focusing on the importance of micronutrients, proper cooking practices, and the role of WIFS (Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation) in preventing anaemia. “Students must learn to value what they eat, not just eat to fill their stomachs,” she said.
Anie Swer, Block Coordinator of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), emphasized that Swachh Bharat is not just a campaign, but a shared mission. She encouraged students to work together with teachers, families, and local bodies to maintain cleanliness. She also conducted a demonstration on the 7 steps of effective handwashing, engaging students in a hands-on hygiene session.
School Principal Shri Longshisha Shabong welcomed all dignitaries and thanked CBC Shillong for organising the event. He affirmed the school’s commitment to integrating these values into the daily lives of students.
In his concluding remarks, Gopajit Das, Assistant Director of CBC Shillong, praised the students’ enthusiastic participation. “This programme shows how awareness can inspire action. The energy shown by students today proves that small steps at the grassroots can lead to big changes,” he said, encouraging them to be champions of cleanliness, nutrition, and sustainability.
The event also featured an art competition and quiz, themed around health, hygiene, and the environment. Winners received certificates and prizes, motivating others to learn and engage through active participation.
