Shillong, Aug 19: A group of researchers from the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has developed an essential oil diffuser made entirely from bamboo, which has now been published in the Patent Office Journal of India.
The invention, titled “A Whole Bamboo Culm Based Essential Oil Diffuser,” uses a natural bamboo internode as the container for essential oils. The design helps in cooling the oil mist and provides natural insulation, while being low-cost and eco-friendly.
The diffuser works by storing the essential oil in the bamboo container, which is then atomized. The mist passes through a buffer space before being released as a cool vapor suitable for aromatherapy. The researchers say the bamboo-based design is a sustainable alternative to plastic and metal diffusers.

“This innovation not only promotes the use of bamboo, which grows abundantly in Northeast India, but also shows its potential in the wellness and aromatherapy sector,” one of the researchers said.
The team behind the patent includes Dr. Deboja Sharma and Dr. Parimita Saikia from USTM, along with Bhubnesh Kashyap, Sohail Ameen Sahariah, and Manirul Islam from the Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Ri-Bhoi.
The patent, published on August 15, 2025, is expected to create opportunities for eco-friendly product development in the wellness industry, where demand for sustainable lifestyle solutions is steadily growing.
