Guwahati , July 21: The Northeast’s management education landscape has marked a major milestone with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati commencing its inaugural academic session with its first cohort of 52 students from across the country.
Calling it a significant step in Assam’s efforts to emerge as a major higher education destination, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said IIM Guwahati, India’s 22nd IIM, has the potential to become one of the country’s premier management institutions. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support in establishing the institute.
Located at Tech City in Bongora, near Guwahati airport, the institute will initially operate from its temporary campus, while its permanent campus is being developed in Kamrup district. IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the institute during its formative years.
With the launch of IIM Guwahati, the Northeast now has two Indian Institutes of Management, alongside IIM Shillong, which was established in 2007 and has earned international recognition, including the prestigious AACSB accreditation. The new institute is expected to further strengthen management education across the region.
Beyond positioning Assam as an emerging education hub for eastern India, IIM Guwahati is also expected to boost entrepreneurship, innovation, skill development and regional economic growth.
The establishment of another premier national institution reflects the government’s continued push to strengthen quality higher education in eastern and northeastern India while creating new opportunities for students closer to home.
