Guwahati, Aug 19: A Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) was caught red-handed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption while accepting a bribe of ₹6,000 in Nagaon district of Assam for processing pension-related work.
The accused has been identified as Mehbub Ahmed Laskar.
“Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached this Directorate for necessary legal action. Accordingly, a trap was laid today at the BEEO office in Nagaon, where the officer was caught red-handed immediately after accepting ₹5,000 as part of the demanded bribe,” an official statement said.
The tainted money was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses and seized as evidence.
Finding sufficient evidence, the officer was arrested by the Directorate team. A case has been registered at the ACB Police Station on August 5, 2025, vide ACB P.S. Case No. 45/2025 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).
Further legal proceedings are underway.
