Guwahati, Oct 4: The mystery surrounding the death of Assam’s music icon Zubeen Garg has deepened with sensational claims made by his bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami in a confessional statement to police.
Goswami has alleged that Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma and fest organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta poisoned the singer and staged his death as an accidental drowning during a yacht trip in Singapore. His statement, recorded under Section 175 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), accuses the duo of deliberately choosing a foreign venue to conceal the conspiracy.
The testimony forms the basis of Sharma’s arrest on charges of criminal conspiracy, murder, and culpable homicide, as detailed in the arrest note signed by Dr Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police, CM’s Special Vigilance Cell.
According to Goswami, Sharma behaved suspiciously while staying with him at Singapore’s Pan Pacific Hotel. During the yacht trip, Sharma allegedly seized control of the vessel, making it unstable and putting passengers at risk. He also insisted on providing drinks himself, instructing Assam Association (Singapore) member Tanmoy Phukan not to arrange any.
As Zubeen struggled in the water, Goswami claims Sharma was heard shouting, “Jabo de, jabo de”(“let him go, let him go”). He stressed that Zubeen, a trained swimmer who had coached both Sharma and himself, could not have died by drowning. Instead, Goswami alleges, the singer was poisoned.
He further claimed that Sharma instructed him not to share any yacht videos.
When Zubeen began frothing at the mouth and nose, Sharma dismissed it as acid reflux rather than arranging medical help—an inaction that police allege hastened his death.
Meanwhile, Zubeen’s wife, Garima Garg, has also recorded her statement under Section 164 CrPC before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court. She submitted documents and details regarding the suspects, stating that she had no prior knowledge of the yacht party or even the island trip in Singapore.
She further alleged that Sharma withheld this information from her.
