Guwahati, Oct 22: In a landmark judgment, the District and Sessions Judge of Barpeta, Deepak Thakuria, has sentenced Rishabh Das to death for the brutal murder of his wife and daughter, a crime that shocked the town in October 2023.

The court’s decision marks the first-ever death sentence delivered by the Barpeta District and Sessions Court in its judicial history, underscoring the gravity of the crime and the pursuit of justice.

The incident occurred on October 13, 2023, at Gandhi Nagar in Barpeta, where Rishabh Das, in a fit of rage, hacked to death his wife, Binita Das, and their daughter, Hiya, with an axe. Hiya, a bright Higher Secondary student, was known among her peers for her cheerful disposition and academic promise—her life tragically ended at the hands of her own father.

Barpeta Police apprehended Rishabh Das on the same day, and an extensive investigation led to a swift charge sheet and trial.

Court records also revealed a history of violence—nearly eight years earlier, Rishabh had attacked his younger sister with a machete, severing one of her fingers. This pattern of aggression painted a disturbing picture of his temperament and weighed heavily during the sentencing.

After nearly two years of legal proceedings, Judge Thakuria pronounced the death penalty by hanging, declaring the case among the “rarest of the rare.”

The verdict has been widely viewed as a powerful statement on justice, reaffirming that heinous crimes—particularly acts of violence against one’s own family—will be met with the severest punishment under the law.
