Tura, Oct 23:A dramatic incident at Tura’s Chandmari area near the Winger Stand on Wednesday evening has gone viral on social media, after a mentally unstable man attacked an on-duty traffic constable, triggering a brief but intense scuffle.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man, dressed in a white shirt, suddenly approached the constable—who was directing traffic—and punched him without warning. Believing it to be an unprovoked assault, the constable instinctively retaliated, landing multiple blows that left the man collapsing on the road.
The altercation, captured by bystanders on mobile phones, quickly spread across local social media platforms. The footage clearly shows the man initiating the attack, followed by the constable’s reaction.
Soon after, the man was identified and rushed to Tura Civil Hospital by his wife, who informed authorities that he has a history of mental illness. He was subsequently admitted to the psychiatric ward for treatment.
Reports suggest that the same individual caused a commotion inside the hospital’s psychiatric unit, allegedly damaging property and breaking window panes. However, hospital authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident or confirm the extent of the damage.
Police and hospital officials are reviewing the matter and are expected to issue a formal clarification following their inquiry. The traffic constable involved has not made any public comment so far.
The incident has reignited discussions on the intersection of law enforcement and mental health, underscoring the urgent need for better public awareness, crisis intervention training for frontline personnel, and stronger support systems for individuals with psychiatric disorders in public spaces.
