SHILLONG, JUNE 9: The indefinite hunger strike by a mother of three children, Bindas Syiem entered the fourth day on Sunday. The state government is yet to give any written assurance in regards to the dilapidated Nongpoh-Umden to Sonapur road.
People from Umden area and different parts of the region including politicians and NGO leaders have visited and extended their full support to the hunger strike protest by Bindas.
Speaking to reporters, the agitating mother said that there has been no communication from the state government pertaining to her demand.
She stated that ,”my message is clear, if the government wants me to call off my hunger strike, the chief minister or deputy chief minister in-charge PWD (Roads) should be ready to give me in writing a satisfactory assurance to immediately start the construction of the Nongpoh-Umden to Sonapur road,”.
According to her, the road has been left unattended for the past 15 years affecting the people of the area.
“Different NGOs and associations have tried their best to find out the status of the road but till today we are yet to get a clear cut clarification on the matter. Therefore, I urge the government to address the issue in the interest of the people of the area,” she added.
On her decision to reject the appeal made by the Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Bindas said, “this is because I am not ready to accept any assurance given by the MLA or by the engineer of the department concerned as I want the satisfactory assurance to come directly from the CM or the deputy CM. If not, I am determined to continue with my protest.”
Tiplem Lymphuid, a resident of the area, came to the protest venue along with his family to extend full support to Bindas, who he referred to as Ka Phan Nonglait (Khasi woman freedom fighter) of the region.
“The hunger strike protest by Bindas clearly shows that the people of the area are fed up with the false promises made during elections. For many years, there has been no repairing of the road. Assurances have been given but there is no sign of any repairing work on the road,” he said.
“I urge the state government to take up the matter seriously and address the issue at the earliest in the interest of the people of the area, who are affected by the condition of this particular road,” Lymphuid added.
Many have also condemned the attempt made by the state police to forcefully shift Bindas to a hospital.
Meanwhile, people from Umden will be meeting on Monday, to take a call on the need to extend full support by joining hands with Bindas in her hunger strike the parking lot adjacent to the additional secretariat.
Nongtluh Mathan Marmain Development Forum (MMDF) have announced that the meeting will be held at Madan Umden.
