Guwahati, March 16: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are yet to finalise a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
With the election schedule announced, major political parties have intensified campaign activities across the state.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the gazette notification for the Assam Assembly elections on Monday. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, while polling will be held on April 9.
Several opposition parties, including the Congress, have already released partial lists of candidates for the 126-member Assembly.
Meanwhile, the BJP has finalised a seat-sharing arrangement with another ally, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), for the 15 seats in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Under the agreement, the BPF will contest 11 seats, while the BJP will field candidates in the remaining four.
However, a similar understanding with the AGP is yet to be reached.
“There are no complications in our friendship. Both parties — one national and the other regional — share a common ideology. We only have differences in our approach to taking Assam forward,” BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita said, without commenting on the status of seat-sharing talks.
