Guwahati, July 9: The body of an Indian Army soldier from Assam has been recovered nearly nine months after he went missing in an avalanche in October last year.
Gautam Rajbongshi, a resident of Gogomukh village in Lakhimpur district, Assam, was serving as an Instructor at the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) in Leh.
On October 8, 2023, Rajbongshi and two other soldiers went missing when an avalanche struck a group of Indian Army mountaineers during a routine training exercise near Mount Kun in Ladakh.
The incident involved approximately 40 army personnel on a training ascent as part of their preparation for high-altitude warfare and adventure missions. The avalanche initially resulted in the death of one soldier and left three soldiers, including Rajbongshi, missing.
Despite relentless efforts, the initial rescue operations were severely hampered by extreme weather conditions and treacherous terrain at 13,000 feet. For months, the missing soldiers remained unlocated.
However, the Indian Army recently resumed the search operation and the bodies of all three missing soldiers were finally recovered.
Rajbongshi’s family was informed about the recovery of his body on July 8. His mortal remains are expected to reach his native village on July 10.
