Bogibeel emerging as new trade and economic hub in Upper Assam

Must read

Dibrugarh, March 15: The Bogibeel region in Upper Assam is rapidly emerging as a new centre of trade and economic activity, driven largely by improved connectivity following the construction of the Bogibeel Bridge.

Once considered a remote and underdeveloped area with limited economic opportunities, the region is now witnessing steady growth with increasing commercial activity, rising local employment, and growing interest from entrepreneurs.

The Bogibeel Bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has permanently bridged the long-standing connectivity gap between Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts. The improved road and rail links have opened new avenues for trade, travel, and regional development.

Local residents say the transformation has been particularly visible in livelihood opportunities. Earlier, many people from the Bogibeel area had to travel long distances in search of work. With the rise in traffic and movement of people across the bridge, several small businesses have come up along the route.

Reena Chetia, a resident of the area, now runs a small roadside stall selling betel nut and tea along with her husband near the bridge. She recalled that before the bridge was built, her husband had to travel far away for work, making it difficult for the family to manage daily expenses.

“With more vehicles and travellers passing through the area now, we started this stall and are able to earn a livelihood here itself,” she said.

According to locals, more than 200 small and medium-sized shops have sprung up around the Bogibeel area in recent years, providing livelihood opportunities to hundreds of families.

Another resident, Parag Dutta, said travel between Bogibeel and Dhemaji earlier involved crossing the Brahmaputra River by boat, which was often risky, especially during bad weather or at night. Medical emergencies were particularly difficult as patients travelling to hospitals in Dibrugarh frequently faced delays.

“With the bridge now operational, people from Arunachal Pradesh and various parts of Upper Assam can reach Dibrugarh within about two hours,” he said.

The region is also attracting interest from entrepreneurs, with preliminary groundwork already underway for the establishment of new industries. Local youth Debashish Dutta believes the Bogibeel area has the potential to develop into an important industrial hub in the coming years.

Industrial prospects are further strengthened by the presence of major infrastructure such as the nearby Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited complex.

Dibrugarh MLA and Assam Cabinet Minister Prasanta Phukan said the Bogibeel Bridge has triggered a major phase of development in the region, with the expansion of Dibrugarh town gradually extending towards the Bogibeel side.

He noted that following the construction of the bridge, a railway station was also established at Dhamal village where trains now halt regularly. Freight trains are already transporting goods through the route, encouraging traders to set up warehouses and storage facilities in the area.

Phukan added that cargo transportation through inland waterways on the Brahmaputra is also expected to begin soon with the development of a jetty at the Bogibeel river ghat, which could significantly reduce logistics costs.

“Regions connected by road, rail and waterways naturally experience faster development,” he said, adding that the Bogibeel Bridge project has laid a strong foundation for economic growth and job creation.

He also pointed out that the decision of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to declare Dibrugarh as the second capital of Assam has further accelerated development in the region.

With expanding infrastructure and increasing investment prospects, the Bogibeel area is expected to emerge as a major trade and industrial centre of Assam in the coming years.
