Guwahati, Sept 10: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced the successful restoration of Borbari Hill’s lost greenery, transforming the once-barren urban landmark into a thriving forest cover.

Sharing a video update on social media, Sarma expressed elation: “Promise made, promise delivered. The Borbari Hill is once again green and flourishing, reflecting our commitment towards a sustainable and eco-friendly Guwahati.”

Remember I told you about the Borbari Hill in Guwahati which lost all its greenery and promised you to restore its urban forest avatar in 2023?

Well, 2 years later, here is an update and the progress is for everyone to see.

Fulfilling a pledge made in 2023, the initiative has seen over 4,200 native saplings planted under Assam’s first Miyawaki forest project, turning Borbari Hill into a vital “green lung” for the city while boosting local biodiversity.

The Miyawaki method is a Japanese technique developed by botanist Akira Miyawaki to create dense, self-sustaining mini-forests in small urban spaces by planting a wide variety of native plant species closely together, accelerating growth and biodiversity to mimic natural ecosystems in a short timeframe. This method results in forests that grow 10 times faster, are significantly denser, and require minimal maintenance after.

Located on the bustling eastern fringes of Guwahati, Borbari Hill had suffered severe degradation due to unchecked urbanisation and encroachment, stripping away its vegetation and exposing slopes to erosion.

The restoration, driven by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) with support from community volunteers, comes at a time when Assam faces rampant deforestation, rising pollution, and recurring urban floods.
