Tinsukia, Sept 10: Municipal workers in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia town took an unusual step against a repeat offender by dumping a heap of commercial waste right back at the shop it came from.
The incident, captured in a viral video, occurred around 9.30 pm on Monday in the Daily Bazar area. An employee of a grocery-cum-gift shop was seen discarding cardboard cartons and other waste onto the roadside. The act was spotted by a team of Tinsukia Municipal Board (TMB) workers on night patrol.

On being questioned, the employee admitted the waste belonged to his shop. Instead of levying a routine fine, the workers decided to send a stronger message. The next morning, around 8 am, they returned with an excavator, collected the dumped waste, and deposited it in front of the shop’s shutter, leaving the owner to confront his own garbage.
Illegal dumping by shopkeepers after closing hours has long been a problem in Tinsukia, despite repeated warnings and fines from the municipal board.
“This town has become dirty because some shopkeepers don’t follow any rules. Every night, they throw their garbage onto the roadside. I welcome the step taken by the municipal workers—it was much needed. People here lack civic sense and are spoiling their own town,” said Umkanta Mech, a Tinsukia resident.
