Brahmaputra breaches danger mark in Dibrugarh, over 10,000 affected

Must read

Dibrugarh, June 1: The Brahmaputra River breached its danger mark in Dibrugarh on Sunday following days of torrential rain, triggering flood concerns across the district. Water Resources Department officials reported the river flowing at a critical 105.85 metres — 15 centimetres above the danger level of 105.70 metres.

At least 35 villages across the district have been impacted by the sudden rise in water levels, displacing or affecting over 10,000 residents, according to district officials.

The monsoon has arrived with force in upper Assam, and forecasts suggest continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, both in the region and in the upstream reaches of Arunachal Pradesh — a situation that could push river levels toward historic highs.

Dibrugarh last faced a major threat from the Brahmaputra in 1998, when the river touched its highest recorded level of 106.48 metres. “The water level is concerning. We are monitoring the situation closely,” an official from the Water Resources Department said on Sunday.

With fears of embankment breaches and riverbank erosion mounting, the district administration has issued an alert and urged riverside communities to remain vigilant. “We are in the early phase of the flood season, and conditions may deteriorate further,” a senior district official warned.

Residents can reach out via mobile at 9435358371, landlines at 0373-2312940 or 0373-2450100, and a toll-free number, 1077, to report any incidents promptly.

Meanwhile, water levels in the Brahmaputra’s key tributary, the Buridehing, are also rising. At Naharkatia, the river was recorded at 118.58 metres, nearing the danger threshold of 120.40 metres. In Khowang, the level stood at 101.43 metres, just below the danger mark of 102.11 metres.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and prepare for possible evacuation as rainfall continues across the region.
