Operation Jal Rahat-2: Assam Rifles rescues over 800 in Manipur flash floods

Imphal, June 1: The Indian Army and Assam Rifles on Saturday launched “Operation Jal Rahat-2,” a large-scale rescue mission, and successfully extricated over 800 individuals from various flood-affected areas across Imphal East and Imphal West districts in Manipur.

The swift response came after incessant torrential rains triggered severe flash floods in parts of the state. Troops of Assam Rifles were rapidly deployed to the most critical locations, including Porompat, Wankhei, Sanjenthong, Palace Compound, New Checkon, Khurai Heikrumakhong Heinang, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, and Nongmeibung Raj Bari.

In a press statement, PRO & Spokesperson, Ministry of Defence, Manipur, Nagaland and Southern Arunachal Pradesh, said two major rescue columns spearheaded the operation. The first column, operating from Singjamei, conducted extensive rescue efforts in Wangkhei Khunou, safely evacuating 193 individuals, which included 85 women and 44 children. Simultaneously, the second column in Heikrumakhong rescued 182 persons, comprising 90 women and 57 children. An additional 408 people, including 179 women and 92 children, were extricated from other affected areas in Imphal East and West districts.

The total number of rescued persons reached approximately 800, notably including 10 to 20 differently-abled and aged individuals. All those rescued were safely relocated to higher and secure ground. On-site aid included the provision of drinking water, food packets, and immediate medical assistance from Assam Rifles health experts.

The statement also pointing out a critical incident, where a distress call was received from Khurai regarding missing children. Troops quickly launched search parties, successfully locating and rescuing the children in the afternoon.

Furthermore, in the early hours, Assam Rifles swiftly evacuated the office of All India Radio (AIR), Imphal, following an urgent request from the Director, AIR. The premises had been severely inundated, necessitating the immediate relocation of both staff and crucial IT and communication equipment. This prompt action ensured the safety of personnel and the preservation of essential broadcast infrastructure.

“Rescue efforts were carried out under intense conditions, with multiple columns fully equipped with buoyant rescue boats operating relentlessly to assist affected civilians. The situation is now under control, and Assam Rifles remains fully committed to supporting the people of Manipur during this crisis,” the statement further said.
