Shillong, June 1: Amid ongoing political developments following former legislator Jemino Mawthoh’s resignation from the United Democratic Party (UDP), the State BJP on Saturday said it would warmly welcome the veteran leader if he decides to join the party, describing his experience as a valuable addition.
Breaking its silence on speculation about Mawthoh’s next political move, BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang stated that while there have been no official discussions so far, the party remains open to his entry.
“There has been no discussion, but of course BJP embraces anyone who wants to come and join our party. If Dr Jemino Mawthoh joins, he will be an asset to us with his expertise and his knowledge and whatever he has will boost our party. Our doors are always open,” said Kharkrang.
Mawthoh, a former MLA and a senior leader in the UDP, resigned from the party after over a decade of association on Saturday. He also resigned from his role as Honorary Adviser to the state government.
Although the BJP has not made any formal approach, its willingness to welcome Mawthoh is expected to spark further discussion. Known for his grounded leadership style and administrative clarity, Mawthoh has held key roles in the UDP, including working president and general secretary. He also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the Shillong constituency.
