Torrential rains lash Northeast: Mizoram records 1100% Rainfall Surge, triggers floods and landslides

Must read

Guwahati, June 1: In a dramatic shift from dry to deluge, the Northeast was pounded by torrential rains over the past 24 hours, with Mizoram bearing the brunt. The state recorded a staggering 117.8 mm of rainfall—an eye-popping 1102% above its normal of 9.8 mm—triggering floods and landslides in multiple districts. This marks the highest single-day rainfall departure among all northeastern states, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meghalaya followed with 121.7 mm of rain—675% above normal—while Arunachal Pradesh soaked in 91.2 mm against a typical 11.6 mm. Manipur (74.2 mm vs. 8.2 mm), Nagaland (51.7 mm vs. 7 mm), and Assam also reported large excess rainfall, with only Tripura (15.9 mm vs. 12.6 mm) staying within moderate excess levels.

The IMD classified rainfall across six northeastern states—excluding Tripura—as “large excess” between 8:30 a.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Mizoram saw the most dramatic departure from norms, followed by Manipur (805%), Arunachal (686%), Meghalaya (675%), Nagaland (638%), and Assam (427%).

This sudden spike comes just days after IMD reports showed deficient May rainfall in Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura. With the arrival of the monsoon, that picture has reversed. Mizoram, Arunachal, and Tripura have now reached normal monthly averages, while Manipur has surged into the ‘large excess’ category.

Officials confirmed that intense rainfall is expected to ease over the next 24 hours, but isolated heavy to very heavy showers are likely to continue in parts of the region on Sunday. Meanwhile, rescue teams have been deployed in affected areas of Mizoram, as landslides and inundation disrupt normal life.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay alert and follow local advisories as the monsoon season gains momentum across the region.
