BSF fires on cattle smugglers in Assam; one injured

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 2: One suspected cattle smuggler sustained pellet injuries after the Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire during an anti-smuggling operation along the India–Bangladesh border in Assam’s South Salmara–Mankachar district on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the Char Kukurmara area under the Mankachar subdivision in the early hours of the morning. The injured individual has been identified as Swaher Ali.

According to official sources, the BSF intercepted a group of cattle smugglers around 4 am while they were attempting to illegally transport cattle through the Kukurmara border sector. Despite being challenged and asked to stop, the smugglers allegedly ignored repeated warnings and attempted to flee with the cattle.

BSF personnel subsequently fired pellet shots in self-defence to prevent the smuggling attempt, injuring one of the suspects. Swaher Ali was later shifted to Hatsingimari Civil Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

“We have recovered two cattle along with nylon ropes, cutting tools, sticks, and other materials commonly used in cattle smuggling from the spot. Further investigation into the incident is underway,” a BSF official said.
