Tura, March 8: Concerned over inaccuracies in official signage and inscriptions of Balpakram National Park in South Garo Hills, two organisations have urged to correct the spelling and other important transcriptions.

The letter to the Director of Balpakram National Park, signed by Arcosh M. Momin, Editor of Ku•riping Magazine, and Sengkam N. Sangma, President of the Garo Hills Wildlife Protection Society, has highlighted the incorrect spelling of the park’s name as “Balpakhram” in visitor information boards and an inaugurated monument.

They stress that such mistakes could mislead future generations and distort the cultural and historical significance of the park.

They have also pointed out errors in the transcription of traditional words, emphasising the importance of accuracy in preserving indigenous heritage. Furthermore, they noted the omission of the glottal sound marker (raka), which alters the intended meaning of several words.

“Misspellings can give the wrong information to the young generation and also give wrong information to the world as a whole. We also noticed that some words should be put raka (•) (simple dot for glottal sound). Without putting raka it is far from the real meaning”, said the letter of the two organisations.

Among the requested corrections, they have specifically called for the proper spelling of Balpakram in all official records. They have also identified mistakes in the names of certain places, including Matchu Boldak, where “Nentakram” should be “Neng•takram,” and Gitingni Chu•ring, where “Dotgittim” should be “Dotgittam.” Similarly, “Rong•jsleng” in Goera Rong•jaleng should be corrected to “Rong•jaleng.”

The petitioners have urged the authorities to take immediate action to rectify these errors, ensuring that Balpakram National Park is accurately represented in all official documentation and signage.
