Guwahati, July 18: From being one of the least-ranked cities in previous years to now topping the charts in the Northeast—Guwahati has officially emerged as the cleanest capital city in the region, according to the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25.

In a proud moment for Assam, Guwahati was honoured with the ‘Promising Swachh Shehar Award’ under the 3–10 lakh population category, securing the 44th national rank. The city also achieved ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) status and earned a 1-Star Garbage Free City rating—marking a major leap in its urban sanitation journey.

“Dedicated action, visible transformation!” Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, applauding the city’s journey from the bottom of the rankings to the top in the Northeast.

Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania, who received the award at a ceremony in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, said the recognition reflects the collective spirit of the city.

“With the ODF+ tag and GFC 1-Star rating, we are officially the cleanest capital city in the Northeast. This award is not just a title—it’s a motivation to continue building a cleaner and greener Guwahati,” he said.

Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah also praised the milestone, noting that the honour is the result of months of coordinated effort, citizen participation, and sustained sanitation campaigns.

“My heartfelt thanks to every citizen of Guwahati for being part of this transformation,” he said.

Officials credit the achievement to innovative waste management solutions, awareness drives, and the strong backing of the Swachh Bharat Mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
