Capacity building programme on ICAR-IIHR held at West Jaintia Hills

Shillong, Sept 21: The Department of Horticulture, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, in collaboration with Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College and Skill Development Center (DDUCC &SDC)organized a Capacity Building Program on ICAR-IIHR Technologies for Production of  rich Vegetable crops at the DDUCC & SDC  Wahiajer WJH Meghalaya on Saturday  to ensure the healthy livelihood amongst the community in accordance to the celebration of National Nutritional Week in India with a slogan “ Eat right for a better Life”.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar graced the programme as chief guest in the presence of Prof. S. Umdor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong, Prof. S.K. Dixit, Registrar I/c, NEHU, Shillong ,F. R. Sumer, Principal I/c, DDUCC along with many dignitaries.

Sniawbhalang appreciated the Dept. of Horticulture NEHU Tura  for this initiative and congratulated DDUCC, NEHU for various skilled-based training programmes which had benefitted the youth and women of the community.

He urged the farmers to face the challenge and become entrepreneurs for sustainable livelihood.

The minister assured necessary infrastructure support for the growth and development of DDUCC.

Prof. S. Umdor, PVC, NEHU emphasized the importance of horticultural farming to ensure healthy food to their families and to explore the various government schemes/subsidies in order to promote their farming activities.

This programme aim to spread IIHR Technologies to the farmers of Jaintia Hills and to sensitize the participants on the advanced horticultural production technologies to practice in their respective farms by cultivating nutrient rich vegetables crops to ensure healthy food for their families to maintain a sustainable livelihood.

Altogether, 250 farmers mostly women were benefited by receiving Arka Vegetable seed kits sponsored by ICAR-IIHR Bengaluru.

Around 300 participants attended training session on ICAR-IIHR technologies conducted by Prof. C. P. Suresh, (Organizing Secretary) from Department of Horticulture, NEHU, Tura Campus and  Risakaru Lyngdoh, SMS in Agronomy, KVK. Wahiajer.

During their lively interactive sessions the participants gained valuable insights and knowledge related to various types of horticultural farming techniques with a focus to promote health and wellness especially amongst the youth and women of the community.
