Tura, Sept 20: Tura Christian College (TCC), one of the leading institutions in Garo Hills, celebrated its 8th Foundation Day on Saturday with a ceremony that combined academic reflection, recognition of excellence and a vision for the future.

Former Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Captain Williamson Sangma State University Registrar, Ambrose Ch. Marak, attended as Guest of Honour. The event was also attended by church leaders, civil society representatives, NGO members, senior citizens and the Nokma of Rongbakgre.

Welcoming the gathering, Shri Beryl B. Sangma, Vice President of the College Governing Body, recalled the institution’s journey since the establishment of Tura Christian Academy in 2010. He stressed that the vision of its founders, led by Baptist church leaders, was to provide education rooted in Christian ethics and values.

As part of the celebrations, two faculty members — Mr. Baldhora M. Sangma and Sungjungmenla — were honoured with the Best Teacher Award for their dedicated service.

Guest of Honour Ambrose Ch. Marak congratulated the college community for its achievements and urged them to uphold the philosophy of “Ubuntu” – humanity towards others – while working collectively for shared progress. He described TCC as the brainchild of Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, acknowledging his vision in shaping the institution.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma reflected on his upbringing as the son of teachers, likening educators to blacksmiths who sharpen the minds of students. He spoke on the need for collective responsibility among policymakers, parents and society to prepare children for future opportunities, drawing parallels with the growth trajectories of China and India. Stressing the urgency for reforms in India’s education system, he underlined the importance of equipping students to adapt swiftly to a competitive and fast-changing world.

The Foundation Day celebration concluded with a reaffirmation of Tura Christian College’s commitment to provide quality education grounded in ethics and values while continuing to contribute to the academic and social progress of Garo Hills.
