Guwahati, July 3: A gruesome murder has rocked Guwahati’s Kharghuli area, where a 71-year-old woman, Bandana Das, was allegedly killed by her caretaker in the early hours of Wednesday. The victim was reportedly attacked with a sharp weapon while she was asleep at her residence.

The prime accused, Ratul Das, and his wife—who lived in an adjacent room and were responsible for the elderly woman’s care—have both been arrested.

Briefing the media, ADCP (Central) Sambhavi Mishra said, “Around 6 a.m., we received information about the murder of a 71-year-old woman in Kharghuli. A team comprising ACP Panbazar, the local officer-in-charge, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit, CID, and a dog squad was immediately dispatched to the scene to begin investigations.”

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the victim had been living alone since the death of her husband in 2001 and had no children. The caretaker couple had been residing with her to help with daily chores.

“During questioning, we noticed a fresh injury on the hand of the caretaker, Ratul Das. This raised suspicion, and upon further interrogation, he confessed to the murder,” Mishra stated.

According to police, Ratul climbed onto the roof and entered the woman’s room before stabbing her in the neck with a knife while she slept. He later dumped the weapon in a nearby drain and returned to his room, where he informed his wife of the incident. The couple then allegedly tried to fabricate a story, claiming an outsider had broken in.

At around 5 a.m., the caretaker’s wife reportedly contacted neighbors and relatives, saying the victim’s door was found open and that a break-in may have occurred. However, both eventually admitted to the crime.

Investigators are also examining a possible motive linked to property, given that the deceased had no known legal heirs.

“We are exploring all angles, including the possibility of a property dispute,” Mishra added.

The accused couple remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
