SHILLONG, FEB 26: A brief Garo phrase from Nongthymmai legislator Charles Pyngrope sent the Assembly into laughter on Thursday, after Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma floated the idea of a crash course in local languages for MLAs.
Responding to the proposal, Pyngrope quipped in Garo – “Angaba ia Chanchianiko namnikaha Mittela” (“I am also happy with this discussion, thank you”).
Members burst into laughter, welcoming the senior legislator’s gesture.
Sangma had earlier suggested short-term language classes to bridge divides, noting that government policy already pushes for proficiency in local languages for public employment.
“It would be nice if MLAs from Garo Hills learn Khasi and those from Khasi-Jaintia Hills learn Garo. This would send a good message — that we are leading from the front,” he said.
