Chokpot leaders raise alarm on roads, tourism and unregulated non-tribal entry

Tura, July 13: A joint meeting was held at Nokpante, Raja Ronggat village on Saturday between pressure groups and a unit of the Nokma Council to discuss several pressing issues affecting the area.

The meeting was attended by around 60 Nokmas (village chiefs) and members of various local organisations. The groups included the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), FKJGP, GSMC, AHAM, CAVC, AYWO and ACHIK came together with the Raja Ronggat Unit of the Nokma Council.

In a press communique issued by Jish A Sangma President, GSU Chokpot Regional Unit on behalf of the Chokpot Pressure Groups issued that during the meeting key issues discussed was the preservation of forests, rivers and streams, with the participants voicing strong opposition to illegal deforestation and sand mining. They resolved to take collective action to safeguard the region’s fragile ecosystem.

They also raised another major concern raised was the lack of affiliation for Chokpot Degree College under Captain William University.

The unregulated entry of non-tribal individuals without proper verification into villages was also flagged, with the meeting urging Nokmas to strengthen local oversight to protect community identity and land rights, said Sangma.

In terms of infrastructure, they called for the identification of a proper dumping site for Chokpot Bazar to improve waste management and hygiene. They also pressed for urgent repairs to the main Chokpot road, which they described as being in a deplorable state and crucial for connectivity, education, healthcare and trade.

The promotion of eco-tourism was also on the agenda, with participants stressing the potential of Chokpot’s natural beauty and cultural heritage to generate employment and boost the local economy.

The attendees has come together and agreed in work in close coordination and maintain peace while pursuing these development goals.
