Dibrugarh, Aug 20: The Health Department has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Dibrugarh district, reporting two laboratory-confirmed cases and several suspected cases, alongside five deaths linked to acute gastroenteritis.
Dr. Trishna Borah, Joint Director of Health Services, told reporters on Wednesday that the outbreak has been traced to Pucca Line of Dinjoy Tea Estate in Chabua and Gazal Basti near Duliajan. “There are two confirmed cholera cases based on patient samples. We are treating all symptomatic individuals as probable cholera, though some may be suffering from gastroenteritis or diarrhoea,” she said.

Health officials confirmed that three of the deaths occurred in Dinjoy Tea Estate and two in Gazal Basti. At present, 29 patients are undergoing treatment — ten at Chabua Model Hospital and 19 at Tengakhat Model Hospital.
Tests of water sources in Pucca Line showed high bacterial contamination, prompting authorities to seal the tubewells. The affected areas have also been declared under quarantine to curb further spread.

In response, the Health Department has issued an alert under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). Medical teams have been deployed for surveillance, case management, and disinfection drives. Intensive awareness campaigns through miking and interpersonal communication are underway to educate residents on safe water practices, sanitation, and early reporting of symptoms.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with preventive measures being scaled up to stop the outbreak from spreading beyond the tea estates and nearby settlements.
