CM orders SIT probe into Zubeen Garg’s death

Must read

Guwahati, Sept 24: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday vowed that no one involved in the untimely death of singer Zubeen Garg will be spared.

Taking to X, Sarma wrote: “Regarding the untimely death of our beloved Zubeen Garg, we will not spare anyone. Today, I had a meeting with the @DGPAssamPolice and the ADGP, CID, along with senior officers, including the Chief Secretary, Assam. I have instructed the DGP to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with the best officers of Assam Police. The viscera samples will be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL), Delhi, for detailed examination. The SIT will have full freedom to investigate the case with complete professional integrity.”

Meanwhile, Assam entrepreneur Sanjiv Narayan strongly refuted allegations linking him to the tragedy, dismissing them as a “conspiracy” by “so-called journalist portals.” Addressing the media in Guwahati, Narayan said he was not present at the Singapore yacht party where the incident occurred and had already submitted travel documents to prove his movements.

“These are all false allegations. On the night of September 18, I was in Guwahati for a movie premiere and later flew to Kolkata and then to Singapore, arriving only on the 19th,” he clarified. He added that his visit was at his own expense to release a book on Bhupen Hazarika during the North East Festival, stressing that he was “neither a sponsor nor a beneficiary.”

Narayan recounted receiving a call from Shyamkanu Mahanta about an accident around 3 p.m. on September 19. He rushed to the pier and saw Zubeen being given CPR. “I was shocked and angry that he had been taken to the ocean despite his health condition. That was pure negligence,” he said emotionally, describing Zubeen as “a brother of 37 years.” He pledged “100% cooperation” with CID or even CBI if required.

Public anger was palpable, with protesters gathering outside Prag News while Narayan addressed the press, demanding his arrest along with those of Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, whose phones remained switched off after the incident.

Sarma confirmed that the case has already been handed over to the CID for an independent probe. He further announced that Mahanta and any organisations linked to him are banned from holding events in Assam. “The State Government will not provide any financial grant, advertisement, or sponsorship to any event associated with him. We will also request the Government of India to withhold any such support,” the CM declared.
