Mon, July 20: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday visited the landslide-ravaged Defence Colony in Walo Ward, Mon Town, where he announced an immediate relief package of ₹10 lakh for affected families and assured further government support.
Interacting with residents, Rio expressed condolences to families who lost their loved ones and described the landslide as a tragic incident. He commended volunteers, civil society organisations, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), District Executive Force (DEF) and the district administration for their swift rescue and relief efforts.
The Chief Minister said the increasing frequency of extreme weather events was a reminder of the growing impact of climate change and stressed the need for strict enforcement of building by-laws and safety regulations, particularly in landslide-prone areas, to reduce future risks.
The ₹10 lakh relief was handed over to civil society organisations led by the Konyak Union to provide immediate assistance to the affected families.
During the visit, an investigation team of the Konyak Union presented a video documenting the scale of destruction and informed the Chief Minister that Mon Town remains cut off from several parts of Nagaland after landslides blocked key roads linking Tizit, Naginimora, Sonari, Wakching and Aboi.
Advisor W. Chingang Konyak, speaking on behalf of Konyak legislators, also conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.
Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak thanked the Chief Minister for visiting the affected area, while Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak expressed gratitude for the government’s prompt response and support.
The landslide in Mon district has claimed multiple lives and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure following days of heavy monsoon rain.
